About US Immigration Physicals

For those who are on their journey to American citizenship, US immigration physicals are a critical part of the process. Residents of Memphis, Tennessee, and the surrounding region can rely on Dale Norris, MD, and the team at Honeycomb Medical Group for this essential service. Booking a visit is as easy as a quick phone call during business hours or a few moments on the online scheduling page.

What is the purpose of US immigration physicals?

The government requires all individuals seeking citizenship to undergo a specialized physical exam called a US immigration physical. The purpose of the exam is to ensure public safety by determining if you have any health conditions that could spread to others while you’re in the United States.

Even if you have an existing chronic health or other medical condition, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to move forward in the immigration process.

What should I expect when I come in for a US immigration physical?

For exams performed in the United States, only practitioners designated as civil surgeons by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can complete the required immigration physicals.

When you arrive for your exam, you’ll need to present your passport or another form of government-issued identification. Next, Dr. Norris will review your personal and family health history.

A physical exam follows, and is similar to the process of having an annual physical or check-up. Expect a quick assessment of the following:

  • Eyes
  • Nose
  • Ears
  • Throat
  • Skin
  • Lymph nodes
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing function
  • Blood pressure

The exam doesn’t take long, and isn’t painful or invasive in any way. Blood testing is also part of the process, so be prepared for a quick needle stick and blood draw. You’ll also need to have a basic chest X-ray.

Once the exam is complete, Dr. Norris prepares the required paperwork to complete this step in your immigration journey.

What can I do to prepare for a US immigration physical?

As with all physical exams, taking some time to prepare can help you make the most of your visit. Bring in a copy of your vaccination record and any paperwork that documents your medical history.

If you have any existing health conditions, bring a letter from your current provider explaining your treatment plan. If you have recent chest X-rays, those can also be helpful.

Be aware that a US immigration physical is part of the immigration process, and doesn’t replace a routine annual exam. If you’re overdue for a comprehensive health check-up, speak with Dr. Norris during the visit about Honeycomb Medical Group’s preventive health services.
