Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health?

Women’s health covers a broad range of conditions that primarily affect women, such as endometriosis, HPV, cervical cancer, and menopause. Understanding certain milestones and bodily changes early on can also help you care for your health and prevent future health concerns.

Honeycomb Medical Group provides several services to meet every woman’s unique healthcare needs from childhood and adolescence through adulthood and late adulthood.

What are the most common women’s health services?

As a woman, you may experience many physical and emotional health concerns throughout your life. Some of the most common women’s health services are:

  • Annual physical exams
  • STD testing
  • Family planning and contraception
  • Immunizations
  • HPV vaccination
  • Preconception counseling
  • Urinary incontinence screening and treatment
  • Menopausal issues
  • Bone density screening

The types of services you need change as you age. For example, during an annual physical, a woman in her 60s may need a bone density screening to check for signs of bone loss, while a teenager is more likely to have questions or concerns about her menstrual cycle.

What happens during an annual physical?

During any annual physical, your Honeycomb Medical Group physician takes your vitals (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, etc.) and records your height, weight, and body mass index (BMI).

Your physician will also review your family and medical history before asking about any health problems you’ve been experiencing. This is the perfect time to ask your doctor questions about your health or voice any concerns you have.

No matter your age, a physical exam for women typically includes the following exams:

  • Head and neck exam
  • Lung exam
  • Heart exam
  • Extremities exam
  • Neurological exam
  • Breast exam
  • Dermatological exam
  • Abdominal exam

In addition, you should see a gynecologist at least once every three years for a pelvic exam unless your doctor says otherwise.

Physical exams are designed to prevent future illness, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about the screenings and tests you need.

From ages 45 to 54, Honeycomb Medical Group recommends having a mammogram every year to check for signs of breast cancer. Around the age of 65, you should also start scheduling regular bone density scans to test for bone loss.
